Vignesh Ravichandran is a bright and upcoming young Carnatic vocalist. Born and raised in Pondicherry, India, Vignesh is a prime disciple of guru Pudhuvai Kalaimamani Dr. V S Balamurali. Dr. Balamurali, disciple of Sri. Puducode Krishnamurthy, has been an Assistant Professor in the Department of Music at Bharathiar Palkalaikoodam, Pondicherry for more than thirty years. Vignesh is currently receiving advanced training from Shanmukha Sangeetha Siromani Sri. Vishnudev Namboothiri, disciple of Sri. Chandramana Narayanan Namboothiri and Sri. P. S. Narayanaswamy. Vignesh is pursuing his degree in Master of Fine Arts (vocal) from Annamalai University.
Now based in New York, Vignesh regularly performs full-length concerts in several venues in North America and has received praise from the Carnatic music fraternity in India and USA. Vignesh has won awards in various state and national level Carnatic music competitions, including the "Young Talented Child" award from the Government of Pondicherry and "Yuva Kala Bharati" from the Yuva Kala Kendra trust in Pondicherry.
Vignesh is a member of the innovative NYC-based Navatman Music Collective, a choir dedicated to developing a collaborative approach to Carnatic Music directed by Kala Ratna Roopa Mahadevan. He works frequently with many NY/NJ based dance companies, including Shiva Jyoti Dance Academy, Aalokam and Jiva Performing Arts and senior dancers Guru Tejaswini Raj (New Jersey), Maya Kulkarni Chaddha (New Jersey), Sridhar Shanmugam (New York), Justin Mccarthy (New Delhi) and Navtej Johar (New Delhi).
Vignesh is also a Tamil writer. He has written lyrics for short films and for albums of independent musicians. He has also written and composed for dancers. His recently published book of poetries titled “Yen Kirukkalgal” has received critical acclaim. He has also performed Indian film music in many venues in India & USA. Vignesh is a Computational Biologist who works at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York, USA, investigating rare genomic mutations in familial cancer.
